Autism Ontario Scholarship Lottery

Autism Ontario offers a $1000 scholarship (lottery) to children of paid-up members (of the chapter). Deadline for application is April 25, 2008. There's one for students with ASD and for siblings. You must provide proof of diagnosis so need to act fast for this year. See www.autismontario.com (Under Scholarships), for more information.

For those with limited financial resources, there are several grants to help.

It helps to ask the specialist doing your child's assessment to outline the types of equipment and support that might be required in their report. Disability centres at Universities and Colleges generally require a recent educational assessment (some will help your child get assessed.) The first grant below may help with the cost of this if you're eligible.

1. Canada Study Grant for the Accommodation of Students with Permanent Disabilities - up to $8000 per loan year to cover costs associated with your disability such as tutors, note takers, technical aids, etc. or 75% of the cost of a learning disability assessment up to $1200.

Eligibility - appropriate medical documentation, i.e., educational assessment - have a need for exceptional education-related services to participate

To apply - you must qualify for full-time or part-time Canada Student Loan assistance and then complete a separate application form (form can be accessed through link at end of message).

2. Canada Access Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities - up to $2000 per loan year for those with financial need for tuition, books, supplies, and living costs, etc.

Eligibility - appropriate medical documentation, i.e., educational assessment or receipt of government disability assistance

To apply - eligibility will be determined during the assessment of your student loan application.

3. Bursary for Students with Disabilities (provincial) - up to $2000 per loan year for those in financial need

Eligibility - same as Canada Study Grant for the Accommodation of Students with Permanent Disabilities requirements

To apply - you must qualify for full-time or part-time Canada Student Loan assistance and then complete a separate application form (form can be accessed through link at end of message).

More info on all of the above and other grants based on finances: Human Resources and Social Development Canada, Ontario Student Assistnace Program.

Also, contact your the appropriate disability centre of the College or University to which your son or daughter is planning on attending as soon as possible to find out what services, equipment and facilities they provide. They need to sign off on the forms in 1. and 3. above.
